Tata group gear-up to acquire Wistron’s plant; ready for ‘made in India’ iPhone

By Sanjay Maurya

The Tata Group may soon start manufacturing iPhones in India as it’s all set to acquire a major plant in Karnataka – Wistron’s iPhone factory. The group has been in talks with a Taiwanese company for months now. It has now been revealed that Tata Group will complete the deal by the end of March, according to persons familiar with the matter who spoke with Bloomberg.

If Tata Group successfully acquires this factory, then this would be India’s first home-grown iPhone manufacturer. The government’s goal of turning India into an electronics manufacturing hub is likely to get a significant boost as a result.

Tata Group

Multinational conglomerate company

  • Parent organization: Tata Sons
  • Subsidiaries: Tata Motors, Tata Steel Ltd, MORE
  • Founder: Jamsetji Tata
  • Founded: 1868, Mumbai
  • Revenue: 12,800 crores USD (2022)
  • Headquarters: Mumbai
  • Number of employees: 9,35,000 (2022)

The mentioned source is claiming that both companies are discussing the deal and it has come down to Tata taking over the majority of the joint venture. According to the sources with knowledge of the matter, the Tata Group would allegedly manage the primary operation with the aid of Wistron.

Since the companies have not made it public, they are yet to officially acknowledge whether Tata is acquiring one of the major iPhone factories. “I am not directly involved in that, but it should be really good for India because this is going to create an opportunity in India to manufacture electronics and microelectronics,” N Ganapathy Subramaniam, operating chief at Tata Consultancy Services told Bloomberg in an interview.

Which companies manufacture iPhones?

Apple typically relies on Taiwanese manufacturing companies such as Wistron and Foxconn Technology Group for the manufacturing and assembly of its iPhones. If the Tata group successfully completes the deal, it would significantly boost India’s efforts to create a new contender that could challenge China’s dominance in electronics.

Will the price of iPhones drop?

If Tata starts manufacturing iPhone models in India, then the price of iPhone models in the country may come down. Right now, many iPhone models are assembled in India, but their manufacturing does not happen here. In such a situation, heavy taxes and duties are imposed on iPhones. This additional tax can be deducted in the case of iPhone manufacturing in India.
