Tennis ace Sania Mirza plans to retire after Dubai WTA 1000 event in February 2023
Sania Mirza has confirmed her retirement from professional tennis. The former doubles world No. 1 champion told the World Tennis Association website that the Dubai Tennis Championships in February will be the last tournament of her professional career.
Mirza had initially planned to hang up her racquet after completing the 2022 season but after injury problems sidelined her in the second half of the year, she decided to delay her retirement. Considered the greatest female tennis player, Mirza has won six Grand Slam doubles titles and will compete in her final major this month at the Australian Open, where she won the women’s doubles crown in 2016.

Sania Mirza last year announced her retirement
Mirza, battling a calf injury, had planned to retire at the end of the 2022 season, but an elbow injury in August forced her to miss the US Open. Sania Mirza will partner with Ana Danilina of Kazakhstan at the Australian Open this year.
“I was going to stop right after the WTA Finals because we were going to make the WTA Finals, but I tore my tendon in my elbow right before U.S. Open, so I had to pull out of everything,” Mirza told the WTA Tour’s website in an interview published on Friday (January 7).
“To be honest, the person I am, I like to work on my own terms. That’s why I don’t want to be forced by injury. That’s why I’m training,” she said.
What will Sania do after retirement?
Post-retirement, Sania Mirza plans to focus on her academy in Dubai, which has been her city of residence for over a decade. Apart from this, she also started a tennis academy in Hyderabad. She said- It is important for me to share my experience in the places where I live. So, I have one academy in Hyderabad and one in Dubai. Her last professional tournament, the Dubai Tennis Championships, begins on February 19.
